where most of the war was fought. Britain and France wanted to prevent the
Russians from gaining control of additional Ottoman lands. Suez Canal- A human-made waterway that cut through the Isthmus of Suez. and connected the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. It was
built mainly with French money from private interest groups, using Egyptian labor.

throne and called for a new constitution that would
increase her power.
